South Sudan President Sacks Three Ministers, Governor in Cabinet Reshuffle
In the first decree, announced via a broadcasting agency , Kiir dismissed Wek Mamer Kuol from his position as Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, appointing Joseph Geng Akec as his replacement.
The second decree saw Mary Nawai appointed as the new Youth and Sport Minister, taking over from Akec.
A third decree replaced Nawai, the former Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, with Kuol in her former role.
The fourth decree dismissed Emmanuel Okello as governor of Western Bahr el Ghazal state, replacing him with Sherif Daniel Sherif.
Additionally, Kiir removed Taban Abel Aguek as the deputy commissioner general of the South Sudan Revenue Authority, appointing John Malek in his stead.
No official explanations have been provided for the sudden dismissals.
South Sudan, which gained independence in 2011 after splitting from Sudan, has been plagued by civil war and political turmoil. Despite a 2018 peace agreement meant to end hostilities, the country continues to face challenges in governance. Under the power-sharing agreement, Kiir holds the authority to appoint and remove government officials at both national and state levels, though he must consult political party leaders when dismissing members from opposition groups.
